Remove AI metadata from your images

"AI metadata" is a loose term. Some of it is removable file metadata; some of it is embedded in the pixels and cannot be stripped by editing the file. Knowing the difference matters.

Removable file metadata

Provenance and descriptive metadata such as C2PA Content Credentials, EXIF, XMP and IPTC live in the file container, separate from the pixels. These can be removed by re-encoding the image without them — which is what Unstamped does.

Unstamped validates that the visible pixels are unchanged before returning a cleaned copy, so the image looks identical.

Pixel-level signals are different

Invisible watermarks like Google's SynthID are encoded into the pixels themselves. Removing file metadata does not remove them, and they may remain detectable after processing. Unstamped does not claim to remove SynthID.

Why platforms may still label

Instagram and Facebook can apply AI labels based on multiple signals — embedded metadata, their own classifiers, database matches, or a user's own disclosure. Cleaning removable metadata addresses one input, not all of them, so a specific label outcome cannot be guaranteed.
